Once you’ve enrolled at your dream university, it’s time to prepare for your arrival to the Netherlands!
Let’s break down the main things to start with:
1 - Register at your municipality & get your BSN number
Once arriving in the city you are going to live in, you are required to register yourself at the local municipality as soon as possible.
Once you do this, you’ll receive your BSN number, your citizen service number. This is super important because you’ll need this number for important things like managing your taxes and opening a bank account.
2 - Apply for a DigID
Your DigID is like your digital passport. You can use this to access online government services like Student Finance DUO, Studielink, and tax websites. (Remember to complete Step 1 before doing this - you’ll need your BSN number to register!)
3 - Open a bank account
Trust us when we say that if you don’t already have a Maestro debit card, you’re gonna have a hard time getting around. Several shops and grocery stores only accept these cards, so having a Dutch bank account is going to be a life saver. Some common Dutch bank accounts that are international student-friendly include ABN Amro, ING, and Rabobank.
4 - Apply for Dutch health insurance
It’s mandatory to have Dutch health insurance while you live in the NL. Check out these companies with affordable insurance plans: Zilveren Kruis, Zorg en Zekerheid, Univé Zorg.
Save yourself the stress and prepare early! And if you’re in doubt, feel free to dm us with your questions. We’re happy to help! ⭐️
